GENERAL INFORMATION
Progress has been made on the health front in Egypt. The infant mortality rate declined from 30 in 2001 to 20.5 deaths per 1000 live births in 2006. The mortality rate for children under five has also improved (a mortality rate of 26.4 for each 1000 live births in 2006) due to the increase in the percentage of vaccinated children (97.9%).
Maternal mortality during childbirth has declined but remains too high, especially in the rural zones. Women’s health still requires much attention, not least because 25.8% of childbirths occur without hygienic supervision. While huge investments were made in the health sector last year, further efforts should go into improving health services, such as through increasing the number of doctors, nurses and health-care units according to the population and their distribution over inhabited areas.
Health care is currently among EACD’s main objectives. In the El Marg area, we noticed a lack of health productive services – medical follow-up and health awareness – especially for women and children. This is due to several issues:
- Population increase in the area
- Lack of public services to answer to these new demands
- Poor economic situation of the families
- Dissemination of bad and harmful traditions and habits
OBJECTIVES
Health care is managed in 10 villages in El Marg and reaches around 12,000 beneficiaries, mainly women and children.
The Association is working in cooperation with 10 local Community Development Associations (CDAs), the governmental health department of El Marg and governmental medical units.
Our mission is to establish a self-sustaining, integrated health program among the population of El Marg to:
- Improve the health situation in the El Marg area.
- Increase health productive services, especially for children and women.
- Increase local partners’ abilities and skills, so they may actively participate in developing the local area.
Specific objectives
1. Increase women’s health awareness, focusing on pregnancy stages and children’s health
2. Implement medical treatment services: one equipped clinic – to offer complete services and medical follow-up to target groups, also functioning as a training center for CDA personnel and doctors – and medical units in local community associations that offer basic services to women and children
3. Perform capacity building and offer technical support to local CDAs to increase their role in the development of health services in El Marg, while building up a network among all the organizations
4. Maximize local resources in order for the population to become responsible and self-reliant about accessing health services.
