GENERAL INTRODUCTION
In a recent survey asking respondents what they felt were Egypt’s most severe economic problems, 48% of those polled rated unemployment as their number one concern.
Every year, 600,000 new job seekers enter a labor market stalled by a global and local economic slowdown and high population growth.
According to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics, the unemployment rate was nearly 9% in 2007.
Afflicted by the present economic situation, the majority of the population suffers generally from poverty, in addition to structural problems specific to each area. These problems commonly include a high unemployment rate, a lack of heath and education services and the absence of infrastructure to house these services.
EACDconsiders economic development to be a main pillar for comprehensive development. The Association has initiated a number of activities in El Marg, Cairo and Sahel Seleem, Assiut that aim to boost small business and individual financial status within areas which suffer from very poor economic and social conditions.EACDworks with 10 local Community Development Associations (CDAs) in these areas.
This program includes individual micro-credits, vocational training in factories and workshops (according to job market demand), and small business administrative training that teaches management skills, sales, marketing, book keeping, and savings plans.
